Thirty-five dogs, puppies, cats and kittens landed at the Brandywine Valley SPCA on Thursday after a rescue flight from flood-ravaged Texas.

The West Chester-based shelter is offering pick-your-price adoptions for large adult dogs and adult cats through Sunday, at all its locations.

The animals were already living in Texas shelters before catastrophic flooding struck central and southern Texas around Wednesday, July 15. They weren't pets separated from families during the disaster. Moving them out frees kennel space so Texas shelters can take in newly displaced animals and reunite lost pets with their owners.

"By moving out animals that were already in kennels in shelters, we can allow the shelters on the ground to focus on the recovery efforts, the relief efforts, the reuniting efforts," BVSPCA spokesperson Sara Smith told KYW Newsradio on Wednesday, July 22. "They are out on the ground, helping to reunite pets that might have been separated from their families."

The rescue flight was coordinated with Wings of Rescue, Best Friends Animal Society, and other animal welfare organizations.

The Texas flooding killed at least two people and prompted more than 200 water rescues, according to the Associated Press. Roughly 6 million Texas residents were under a flood watch during the week of July 14.

Who qualifies for pick-your-price adoptions

The promotion covers large adult dogs weighing 40 pounds or more (age 1 and older) and adult cats 6 months or older, according to the shelter. Adopters name their own price. The deal runs through Sunday, July 26, at BVSPCA locations in West Chester, New Castle, and Georgetown, as well as the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey.

Smith said the adoption special helps the shelter make room for the incoming Texas animals.
