West Chester residents can drop off a new backpack at 17 E. Gay St. through early August to help children served by the Crime Victims Center of Chester County start the school year with the supplies they need.
State Sen. Carolyn Comitta announced the drive in a July 6 press release from her office. A collection box sits on the first floor of the building, which is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"As we approach the start of a new school year, we're helping ensure kids are ready to hit the ground running on the first day with new backpacks and school supplies," said Comitta, who serves on the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee and is a former public-school teacher. "If you are able, please consider supporting the families served by the good work at the CVC by donating a backpack."
The drive is part of the Crime Victims Center's annual back-to-school initiative, which provides children receiving CVC services with essential supplies before classes resume. Christine Zaccarelli, CEO of the Crime Victims Center, said in the same release that Comitta's team has helped with the event "for so many years," adding that it is "so much fun to watch our families get to shop and get excited for the new school year."

Founded in 1973, the Crime Victims Center of Chester County is the county's designated provider of services for victims of sexual violence. The nonprofit, headquartered at 135-137 W. Market St. in West Chester, also serves victims of domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, homicide, assault, robbery, identity theft, stalking and bullying. All services are free regardless of income and do not require police involvement.
