A man wanted by the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department on theft charges barricaded himself inside his Thornbury Township home for nearly six hours on June 30 before surrendering to Pennsylvania State Police troopers who found eight firearms he was prohibited from possessing.

David W. Smith, 52, of the unit block of Stony Bank Road, now faces weapons and drug charges on top of the original warrant, according to the criminal complaint filed by state police.

What happened

Troopers and WEGO detectives arrived at Smith's home at 10:06 a.m. on June 30 to serve an arrest warrant. Court records show Smith was wanted for a February incident in East Goshen Township involving theft, receiving stolen property, theft of secondary metal, and conspiracy.

Officers knocked. Someone inside pulled the drapes shut and closed a back window.

No one came to the door.

Police continued to call out to Smith for hours. At 3:55 p.m., he walked out and surrendered. According to the criminal complaint, Smith told troopers he saw police arrive and hid inside, "hoping they would leave."

Firearms and drugs

A search of the home turned up eight firearms, including two rifles described in the complaint as "AK-15-style," a .357 Ruger handgun, three shotguns, and an additional rifle. While waiting outside during the standoff, officers also spotted six marijuana plants growing on a back patio.

Bail and next steps

Smith was arraigned before District Judge Gabriella H. Coleman, who set bail at 10 percent of $250,000.

A preliminary hearing before District Judge Wendy Roberts, originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, was rescheduled to Tuesday, July 21. The outcome of that hearing will determine whether the case moves forward to the Court of Common Pleas.
