Logan Cummings threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns as West Chester East rolled past Conestoga 35-0 in the Vikings' season opener on Friday, Aug. 28.

The non-league shutout at Conestoga gave head coach Dean Owens' program a strong opening to a season in which the Vikings are looking to build on last year's playoff return. East went 6-5 in 2025 and reached the District 1 Class 5A playoffs after a one-year absence, the Daily Local News reported.

Cummings, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound senior committed to Towson University, completed 17 of 22 passes and added a 24-yard rushing touchdown in which he broke several tackles and raced to the pylon. It was the second-highest passing performance of his career, according to the Daily Local's game recap.

"He's the best quarterback I've seen in my career," Owens said after the game. "He stands tall in the pocket and he gets rid of the ball … we're never out of it with Logan on the field."

Running back Cooper Verbos opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Cummings then connected with Matt Kendro on a 63-yard touchdown strike as the Vikings built a 13-0 lead after one quarter and 27-0 by halftime.

Kendro finished with seven catches for 152 yards. Chase Golden hauled in five passes for 74 yards and two scores, including an 11-yard touchdown and two-point conversion that triggered the mercy-rule running clock early in the fourth quarter.

East's offense piled up 336 total yards and converted four of five third downs in the first half. When the Vikings failed on third down, they converted on fourth.

The defense was just as stingy. Conestoga managed 223 total yards and committed three fumbles, losing two. The Pioneers fumbled inside the East five-yard line while trailing 27-0 late in the second quarter. Chris Costa sealed the shutout with an interception on the game's final play.

Owens said he was proud of his first-time starters. Linebacker Ty Hutchinson turned in a standout performance in his first varsity start, and receiver Cole Harper caught four passes for 39 yards in his debut.

The West Chester Chronicle called the shutout one of Week 1's strongest performances across Chester County. The loss extended Conestoga's losing streak to 16 games.
