More than 3,000 first-year and transfer students arrived at West Chester University on Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21, filling residence halls across North Campus with mini fridges, bedding, lamps and boxes loaded into bright purple and yellow carts.

Intermittent rain showers on Thursday didn't slow the process. Hundreds of resident assistants, alumni, faculty, student athletes and staff volunteers lined up outside halls to haul carts and answer questions as the Class of 2030 settled in.

Chantel Detreville, a WCU residence hall coordinator, said Thursday's move-in went smoothly despite the weather. She noted most students managed with just two carts, a sign that fewer freshmen are making the common mistake of packing their entire lives.

WCU President Laurie Bernotsky greeted students and families during move-in. The university expects approximately 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled this fall, according to the Daily Local News, though official figures won't be released until after the 15th day of classes in mid-September.

Returning sophomores, juniors and seniors moved in on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 24.

First-year student Nyla Thomas, from Chichester, arrived with two carts full of pink bedding and accessories. Her mother, Joy Thomas, laughed through tears: "I'm just so proud…that's all I have."

Roommates Antonio Pennetti and James Reed, both pre-business majors from New Jersey, are living in Killinger Hall. They took cover from the rain while browsing the bookstore at Sykes Student Union.

Weeks of Welcome lineup

WCU's "Weeks of Welcome" programming kicked off alongside move-in, with events that help new students build connections and find campus resources. According to the university's newsroom, highlights include:

  • Ram Rally Under the Lights: Friday, Aug. 21, 8–10 p.m. at Farrell Stadium (855 South New St.). Features fireworks, mascot Rammy, the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band, cheer and dance teams, games, prizes and free Ram swag.
  • Golden Hour with Student Affairs: Saturday, Aug. 22, 7–9 p.m. at the Student Rec Center. Music, giveaways and a chance to meet classmates.
  • Welcome and Convocation Ceremony: Sunday, Aug. 23, 1:45–2:45 p.m. at Hollinger Field House (150 University Ave.). The second annual ceremony features remarks from President Bernotsky and student leaders, plus performances by student organizations.
  • Class of 2030 photo: Sunday, Aug. 23, 3–3:30 p.m. on the Academic Quad. Students form the numbers "2-0-3-0," then receive water ice from a Kona Ice truck and exclusive class T-shirts.

Leah Tobin, director of Residence Life and Housing, said the programming is about making sure no student feels like just a face in the crowd. She described move-in day's energy as a mix of new families discovering WCU for the first time and returning families who already feel at home.
