East Goshen Township residents can safely dispose of rechargeable and single-use lithium, nickel and other batteries for free on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the township building, 1580 Paoli Pike, West Chester.
The event is free.
The collection runs from 9 a.m. to noon, held alongside the township's Fall Yard Sale. The Chester County Solid Waste Authority is sponsoring the event, and no pre-registration is mentioned in the township's announcement.
What's accepted:
- Lithium batteries (single-use and rechargeable)
- Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries
- Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries
- Small sealed lead-acid batteries
- Loose battery packs weighing up to 25 pounds
How to prepare:
Remove batteries from devices whenever safe to do so and bring them loose. Tape the terminals of lithium and rechargeable batteries with non-conductive tape, or seal each battery in its own clear plastic bag. Residents with large quantities should sort by type before arriving to speed up the process.
What's not accepted:
Standard alkaline household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D), car and vehicle batteries, electric vehicle batteries, anything over 25 pounds, and any device with a battery still installed. That includes cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, toys and vaping devices.
Batteries that are swollen, leaking, damaged, defective or recalled cannot be brought to the Sept. 19 event. Those require special handling at a Household Hazardous Waste collection. The next scheduled CCSWA hazardous waste event is Oct. 4 in Downingtown, according to the authority's website. Pre-registration is required for hazardous waste events.
The CCSWA has been promoting safe battery disposal through its "Battery Safety Now" campaign, urging Chester County residents to keep rechargeable batteries out of curbside recycling bins where they can cause fires.
