About 12,000 students across West Chester Area School District's 16 schools will head back to class Monday, Aug. 31, starting a new year at Henderson, East and Rustin high schools and the district's elementary and middle schools.

The start date, confirmed on the district's 2026-27 calendar, puts WCASD in line with four other Chester County districts opening the same day, according to a Daily Local News roundup. Four districts — Avon Grove, Great Valley, Owen J. Roberts and Phoenixville — started a week earlier on Aug. 24. Only Oxford Area starts later, on Sept. 2.

Orientations this week

West Chester East High School is scheduled to hold a New Student Orientation on Thursday, Aug. 13, in the Main Gym, with a New Parent Orientation that evening in the Auditorium, according to the school's events calendar. Orientation dates for Henderson and Rustin high schools were not listed on their websites as of Aug. 12.

At the elementary level, individual schools are posting open house and "Sneak-a-Peek" events. Fern Hill Elementary has scheduled separate K-2 and 3-5 open houses before Aug. 31 and posted its supply list online.

Free breakfast expands

One change families will notice this fall: all WCASD elementary and middle school students will receive free breakfast every school day. Mary C. Howse Elementary announced the expansion in a July 23 Instagram post, attributing it to Pennsylvania's participation in the National School Lunch Program. The district said the program covers all elementary and middle schools at no cost to families.

High school families should check the district's Food Services page for free and reduced-price meal applications.

Key deadlines and tools

  • New student registration is still open at wcasd.net.
  • School supply lists are posted on individual school websites.
  • Dental exams are required for students entering kindergarten, first grade and third grade.
  • Bus tracking: The district's Bus Status App (wcasd.busstatus.ca) lets families monitor arrival times in real time.
  • Meal accounts: Parents can load funds through PaySchools Central via the PowerSchool parent portal at ps.wcasd.net.
  • Back-to-school hub: The district's central preparation page at wcasd.net/families-students/back-to-school-information was last updated Aug. 3.

Short first week

Students will have a brief opening stretch. A half-day dismissal is scheduled Friday, Sept. 4, for a PM teacher inservice, and schools close Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day. Teachers report for inservice Aug. 24-27, one week before students arrive.

The next WCASD School Board meeting is Monday, Aug. 24, at the Spellman Education Center. Superintendent Dr. David Christopher leads the district into its new year.
