Avalon Restaurant on Gay Street had to discard temperature-sensitive food after Chester County inspectors found its walk-in cooler at 47 degrees on Thursday, Sept. 17.

The inspection at 116 E. Gay St. was a follow-up to violations cited eight days earlier, on Sept. 9, MyChesCo reported. All food requiring time and temperature control for safety (TCS) that measured above 45 degrees was thrown out. Items at or below 45 degrees were moved to other refrigeration units and ordered used first.

Inspectors directed the restaurant to repair the walk-in refrigerator immediately.

The Sept. 17 visit turned up additional problems. Shellstock tags for clams or mussels had not been dated when the last shellfish was used. An unlabeled spray bottle containing chlorine bleach was found and discarded. A plumbing leak beneath the three-compartment sink, described as continuing from the earlier inspection, must be repaired within seven days of the Sept. 17 inspection.

MyChesCo had previously covered the Sept. 9 inspection as part of a broader roundup of Chester County violations that day. The Sept. 17 follow-up was the second noncompliant result for Avalon in just over a week.

Five other West Chester-area food establishments inspected the same day passed without violations. Dia Doce at 100 S. High St., Pizza 316 at 316 E. Gay St., Vera Pasta at 319 Westtown Road, Suite K, and Wawa #8068 at 1050 West Chester Pike in West Goshen were all listed as in compliance, along with New Directions Childcare Center at 501 E. Miner St.

The Chester County Health Department notes that inspection results are a snapshot of conditions on a single day and may not reflect an establishment's long-term food-safety record.

No public statement from Avalon Restaurant appeared in inspection records or county filings as of publication. No follow-up inspection date has been announced.
